Vaping is Less Harmful Than Smoking. But Is It a Healthy Alternative Either?

Vaping

While it is agreed that vaping involves only a small fraction of risk, it still doesn’t mean that it’s risk free.

“Vaping is less harmful than smoking,” – as per the reviews provided by nicotine products. For this reason, although there has been a substantial reduction in the abuse of toxic substances that cause cancer and cardiovascular diseases, the use of vaping has increased among the young adult population in England.

The Insides of Vaping

According to a 2021 survey conducted by the Office for Health Improvement & Disparities, approximately 87% of adults use vaping products that contain nicotine. In addition, the vaping ratio is 70% among 11-to 18-year-olds.

In exploring the procedure behind the absorbing, delivering, and elimination of nicotine, researchers realize that adults rely on a belief that – “the time taken to reach peak nicotine delivery is comparatively slower than a cigarette.” However, it is not completely true.

It largely depends on the following characteristics that must be checked upon – Type of vaping device, e-liquid nicotine concentration and flavors involved.

Can Vapes Lead to Nicotine Dependency?

When reviewing a 2022 Nicotine Vaping evidence update, the officials of health department suggest that vaping products may demonstrate symptoms of nicotine dependency. As the severity of nicotine dependency is still lower in vaping, it may depend on the product’s characteristics.

An explanation behind the claim is that vaping users often adjust their puffing behaviors to attain higher levels of nicotine. This is a problem when people use vaping products that involve low nicotine levels. Often, a single vaping session isn’t enough to compensate for the nicotine peak that smoking a cigarette offers. Hence, adults adopt a long-term vaping session to reach their desired level of nicotine.

Finding the Right Balance

“Better law enforcement must be called upon,” suggests Ann McNeill, a professor of tobacco addiction at King’s College London. Regulations associated with a dramatic increase in disposable and flavored vapes among adults must be tacked.

In addition, experts who are addressing the matter suggest that “Adult smokers must not be discouraged from transitioning to vaping. However, it must be ensured that they get the right support – through provision of accurate information on reduced risks of vaping.”

With a  right balance, e-cigarettes can play a powerful role intervening the smoking of cigarettes globally.
