According to CDC data, Nevada has the most cases of fungus that could be fatal

Nevada

The research and data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say that Nevada has the most cases of a fungus that could kill you and is resistant to the medicine. This fungus is spreading quickly across the United States.

Overview

The fungus is known as C. auris or Candida auris. Nevada is predicted to report 384 clinical cases in 2022, according to a map on the CDC website that tracks the spread. A significant improvement over the 24 written in 2021. Nevada is one of six states, including California, Florida, Illinois, New York, and Texas, with high focuses.

“It’s not a fair comparison, necessarily, because we had the outbreak,” said Brian Labus, an infectious disease epidemiologist and assistant professor at UNLV. “Comparing Nevada to other states, it’s not a fair comparison, necessarily.” In hospitals, we put in much more effort to identify those cases. Therefore, that might slightly skew the numbers.” However, he stated that it is a problem that only worsens nationwide and in Nevada.

Labus stated, “This is a problem for the most medically fragile hospitalized individuals.” If you already have a lot of health issues, you might experience this. We’re adding an infection on top of some other serious health condition, which is why the death rate is so high.”

End Note

According to the CDC, more than one in three people with an invasive C. auris infection that affects the brain, heart, or blood die.

News 3 inquired of the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services for an up-to-date count for 2023 and information regarding the locations from which C. auris cases are being reported. A spokesperson stated that they would respond to the inquiries by Friday evening.
