In an interview with Insights Care, Azadeh Dastmalchi, the CEO of VitalTracer talks about her pursuit in a new era of health monitoring for senior residents with VitalTracer, discovering a world of unparalleled health monitoring and embarking on a transformative journey toward optimal well-being.

Kindly brief us about your organization and its inception story.
The idea for a monitoring product first came about when I was seeking a smartwatch to help my late father, Kazem, to monitor his hypertension. But this past year, as I followed news of the horrors that COVID-19 was causing in Montreal seniors’ homes, I couldn’t help but think of my father. I wanted to find a way to offer peace of mind to the caregivers and patients.
Please tell us about yourself and your professional journey so far.
I’m the CEO and Co-Founder of VitalTracer, a medical startup that designs smart wearable medical devices. I’m also a Ph.D. candidate at University of Ottawa, obtaining my MSc from the same university in Biomedical Engineering. In the last twelve years, my main field of research has been designing and developing medical devices, particularly vital signs monitoring ones and applying AI to bio-signals.
I’m one of the top 25 women of INFLUENCE RECIPIENTS 2021, Student Entrepreneur National Champion in 2021, a Canadian G20 Young Entrepreneurs’ Alliance, a skilled leader, entrepreneur, business Planner and a successful project manager. I have raised $2M in non-dilutive grants since April 2019. VitalTracer has been awarded several regional and national awards under her leadership, including Mitacs national entrepreneur award, CANNIE regional award for innovative products, the Startup Canada award, and AGE-WELL Emerging Entrepreneur Award (COVID-19 Countermeasures).
I’m also an experienced Research Assistant with a demonstrated history of working in the higher education industry. I also possess skills in leadership, entrepreneurship business planning, and data mining & project management. I have obtained the title of being a strong research professional with a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Biomedical Engineering, focused on Smart Wearable Medical Devices with Machine Learning, Deep Learning and AI Algorithms.

What are the key products and services of your organization and how is it impacting the demographic concerned?
Our key products are VT-Patch and VT-Watch, which goes on the chest and wrist, respectively, and collect all vital signs continuously and conveniently.
In what ways is the organization incorporating emerging technological solutions to be the leading home care solution provider in 2023?
We are applying AI and Machine learning algorithms to translate the collected bio-signals into reliable vital signs.
According to you, what are the challenges the home care industry currently faces and how is your organization making the best out of it?
Currently, the senior care industry is using pen and paper in their management, and it is difficult to implement new technology in the old-fashioned industry. We need to work hard to convince the market to use our product.
What are the future goals of the company? How does it envision scaling up its operations and reach in 2023 and beyond?
Our goal is to become a leading healthcare company in the field of wearable devices and continuous monitoring. We aim to finish our clinical trial in 2023 and close our first round of financing.
