Can you share your personal journey and what inspired you to co-found Wellness Healthcare Group?
As a pharmacist, I’ve always been deeply committed to healthcare accessibility and affordability. Early in my career, I noticed that while we have excellent healthcare professionals in Nigeria, there are systemic challenges that prevent people from receiving quality care. In 2007, this observation drove me to start Wellness, initially as a community pharmacy practice. I wanted to create a solution that not only provided people with easy access to affordable medications but also empowered them to take control of their well-being. Over time, it became clear that solving healthcare challenges in Nigeria required more than just providing medications, it needed a comprehensive, technology-driven, and affordable healthcare platform. That’s how Wellness evolved from a pharmacy into a broader healthcare service provider, offering health insurance, pharmaceutical distribution, and technology solutions to ensure we impact every touchpoint of healthcare delivery.
As the person at the driving seat, what specific initiatives has Wellness Healthcare Group implemented to address healthcare challenges in Africa?
At Wellness, we’re leveraging technology and innovative solutions to tackle some of the most pressing healthcare challenges in Africa. One key initiative is the Wellness Plus app, a digital platform that allows people to manage their health more effectively. Through the app, users can book consultations, access telemedicine services, schedule appointments, and track their health records; all from the convenience of their mobile devices.
Wellness HMO has also brought affordable healthcare insurance to a broader population, and by leveraging technology, we’ve been able to design plans that address the financial barriers many Nigerians face when accessing healthcare services. Through our telemedicine platform, people pay less for health insurance and healthcare services as a whole and have increased access. This is particularly crucial in Africa, where there are often long distances between patients and healthcare facilities and frequent inflation in the cost of healthcare.
How do you perceive the role of women leaders in transforming the healthcare landscape?
Women have always been at the heart of healthcare; whether as caregivers in their homes or as professionals in the sector. However, in recent years, the rise of women leaders in healthcare has brought a transformative shift. Women leaders bring a unique perspective of empathy and collaboration to healthcare, which is essential when trying to create patient-centered solutions. For me, it’s about more than just providing care, it’s about reshaping systems and policies so they work for everyone, particularly for vulnerable groups. Personally, I see the work I do at Wellness Healthcare Group as a reflection of the larger role that women can play.
Wellness Healthcare Group aims to provide accessible business solutions. Can you elaborate on how these solutions are tailored to meet the unique needs of African communities?
Our approach is deeply rooted in understanding the unique healthcare needs of African communities, which are often underserved by traditional healthcare systems. We recognize that accessibility in Africa means more than just physical access; it means affordability, reliability, and culturally appropriate care.
For instance, our Wellness HMO plans are tailored to be flexible and affordable, allowing clients to change and roam hospitals and upgrade their plans easily. This ensures that we cater to the dynamic needs of our clients who may face varying healthcare challenges over time.
Additionally, with the doctor patient ratio being one to ten thousand people, our technology driven platforms address the rural-urban healthcare divide by allowing patients in remote areas to consult with specialists from the comfort of their homes.
We also emphasize creating sustainable healthcare systems through Wellness Medical Distribution, ensuring that healthcare providers have access to essential drugs and medical supplies without the common supply chain disruptions and substandard and fake drug distribution, seen in many African countries. Each of our business solutions is designed to not just fit into the existing healthcare ecosystem but to uplift and optimize it for African contexts.
What are some of the significant challenges you have encountered while establishing Wellness Healthcare Group, and how have you overcome them?
One of the primary challenges has been navigating the regulatory landscape of healthcare in Nigeria, which can be complex and bureaucratic. To overcome this, we’re working to build strong relationships with regulators and policymakers, ensuring that we’re always aligned with evolving healthcare standards.
Additionally, financing healthcare projects in Nigeria can be difficult. However, we are constantly working towards proving the value of our services to enable us to scale and expand our operations through creative partnerships and careful financial planning.
Looking ahead, what are your goals for Wellness Healthcare in the next five years, particularly in the healthcare sector?
In the next five years, our goal is to scale our operations both locally and across Africa, particularly through our digital platforms like The Wellness Plus App, and other upcoming technological driven healthcare solutions. We aim to contribute significantly to universal health coverage, spreading healthcare to even the most remote populations. We will revolutionize the way healthcare is delivered by leveraging available human resources to bring assessments and treatments directly to the people who need it the most.
Another priority is to expand our Wellness Medical Distribution operations across Nigeria, providing standard pharmaceutical and medical products to as many healthcare institutions as possible.
As we expand, our corporate social responsibility initiatives will remain central, ensuring that we continue to create positive impacts in the communities we serve.
What advice would you give to young women aspiring to become leaders in their fields, especially in industries like healthcare and business?
To young women aspiring to lead, I would say, believe in yourself and your vision, even when the path seems difficult. Industries like healthcare and business can be challenging, but they are also full of opportunities for those willing to work hard and stay committed to their purpose. Don’t be afraid to challenge the status quo.
What inspires you personally to continue your work at Wellness Healthcare Group, and how do you maintain your passion for healthcare and business?
What inspires me the most is the impact we’re making on people’s lives. Every time I hear a story about how one of our services helped someone access quality healthcare, it reinforces my commitment. I’m also deeply passionate about health equity, and being in touch with the numerous possibilities of how to achieve it keeps me motivated.
I continuously challenge myself and the organization to innovate because the healthcare landscape is always changing, and there’s always more we can do to improve.
