On Tuesday, the Trump administration said that it will not work with an international cooperative effort to develop and distribute the Covid-19 Vaccine. They say they do not want to be constrained by the multilateral groups like the World Health Organization (WHO).
The Washington Post reported the decision to go alone first. The White House’s decision in early July was to pull United States out of WHO. Trump claims that the WHO is in need of reform and is highly influenced by China.
Some nations have been working towards securing the supplies of vaccine directly, while others are pooling efforts to fight the virus and ensure success against the disease. COVAX or Covid-19 Vaccines Global Access Facility are being set up in more than 150 countries.
“The United States will continue to engage our international partners to ensure we defeat this virus, but we will not be constrained by multilateral organizations influenced by the corrupt World Health Organization and China,” said White House spokesman Judd Deere. He continued, “this president will spare no expense to ensure that any new vaccine maintains our own Food and Drug Administration’s gold standard for safety and efficacy, is thoroughly tested and saves lives.”
