Let us dive into the core of BTS, where progress is nurtured, and individuals and families find a partner in their pursuit of brighter tomorrows.

A Leader in Mental Health Advocacy

In the narrative of Dr. Burnett’s professional journey, the path is marked by a commitment to serving those in need. Graduating from Pacific Union College with a Bachelor of Social Work degree set the foundation for her career. Subsequently, she obtained a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology, embarking on a journey towards licensure as a Marriage & Family Therapist.

As Dr. Burnett reflects on her evolution, she notes, “After co-founding a Foster Family Agency, an opportunity arose for me to serve as the Director at an agency catering to individuals with developmental disabilities, including Autism, Intellectual Disabilities, Cerebral Palsy, Seizure Disorders, and other related conditions.” During this pivotal period, Dr. Burnett successfully obtained her Marriage & Family Therapist license, marking a significant milestone in her professional growth.

Her passion for working with individuals with developmental disabilities intensified, leading her to a role as a Behavior Consultant at an agency specializing in Applied Behavior Analysis services for individuals with Autism. Dr. Burnett fondly recalls, “I continued to develop a passion for serving those with disabilities and other needs impacting their development and daily living skills.” This dedication culminated in her achievement as a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst.

Approximately two years later, Dr. Burnett decided to establish her private practice, Burnett Therapeutic Services. Specializing in mental health services, the practice addressed a spectrum of issues, including depression, anxiety, grief, loss, trauma, OCD, PTSD, and various life stressors. The success was swift, prompting Dr. Burnett to expand the team and welcome other therapists into the practice, one of whom now serves as the Director of Clinical Operations at BTS, contributing expertise cultivated over more than six years.

The Evolution of Burnett Therapeutic Services

Burnett Therapeutic Services (BTS), under the guidance of Dr. Burnett, has undergone a remarkable evolution, driven by a profound commitment to holistic care and positive workplace culture.

As Dr. Burnett ventured into providing therapy, families with children facing Autism and developmental disabilities sought her expertise. Embracing the opportunity to offer Applied Behavior Analysis, BTS swiftly became contracted with various funders, prioritizing personalized care for each family reaching out.

This initiative led to the establishment of two distinct treatment teams within BTS. The ABA team, specializing in early intervention and parent training, focuses on treating children with Autism and developmental delays. Simultaneously, the Mental Health team addresses the diverse needs of children, individuals, adults, and families navigating life stressors, trauma, grief, anxiety, depression, OCD, and other conditions requiring the support of mental health professionals.

In 2021, Dr. Burnett’s dedication extended beyond therapeutic practice as she completed her dissertation on job satisfaction among ABA practitioners, emphasizing a passion for cultivating positive workplace environments. According to Dr. Burnett, “Burnett Therapeutic Services keeps at its core, a focus on a great team environment where staff feel supported and that their ideas are valued.”

The year 2022 brought a unique opportunity for BTS, as they became part of a pilot program developed by Catalight Care Services for Kaiser members called Chat. This innovative program, led by mental health clinicians, focuses on developmental milestones and enhances child-parent dialogues, providing an alternative service model for families where ABA might not be the optimal fit.

Continuing its commitment to expanding service lines, BTS piloted two additional programs for Kaiser members, contributing to a broader impact on families in need. In April 2023, BTS proudly sponsored the Autism Investor Summit at the London in Beverly Hills, showcasing their dedication to discussions on policy, funding, and the future of Autism services.

Empathy in Action

At BTS, the essence of care is woven into every therapeutic endeavor. With a commitment to person-centered approaches, BTS stands as a beacon of support, utilizing trauma-informed care, compassionate practices, and cultural competency, all underpinned by evidence-based practices in the field of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).

Dr. Burnett, the driving force behind BTS, proudly asserts, “BTS is the leading provider of Behavioral (ABA / Autism) and Mental Health Therapy Services for children, youth, adults, couples, and families. We are passionate about helping those who are receiving our services!”

BTS’s dedication extends to a comprehensive service model that goes beyond conventional therapy. Collaborating with clients and their families, BTS engages in communication training, skill-building, coping skills training, family work, therapeutic counseling, behavioral therapy, cultural diversity initiatives, and activities that harness and amplify each client and their family’s strengths.

With a team of specialized therapists employing various treatment modalities, BTS has the versatility to address many life, mental, and behavioral issues. The belief at the core of their philosophy is that every individual, receiving their services, possesses an inherent ability to learn, grow, and succeed when provided with the appropriate support, empathy, and tools.

Developing Connection

At the core of BTS is a profound appreciation for the therapeutic relationship forged with clients and their families. Recognizing the pivotal role of trust in ABA therapy, BTS places paramount importance on continuous rapport building, encouraging an environment where every individual feels actively involved in the planning and implementation of their goals.

Dr. Burnett emphasizes, “We make ABA therapy fun and a positive experience for the learner by being silly, including their preferences, and always upholding professionalism.”

In the development of treatment plans, BTS embraces a person-centered approach, focusing on the client’s capabilities and passions. Dr. Burnett elaborates, “When working with clients and families, we place significance on what the client can do and what they enjoy doing.” This thoughtful approach creates personalized goals, ensuring that each client’s journey is uniquely tailored to their strengths and interests.

An illustrative example of this client-centric philosophy is seen in the cultivation of a goal to teach following one-step instructions. For a client with a passion for cooking, BTS seamlessly integrates this interest into the therapeutic process, initiating the goal with one-step directions in the context of cooking. This personalized and engaging approach enhances the therapy’s effectiveness and transforms the learning experience into a meaningful and enjoyable endeavor.

Client-Centric Excellence

BTS stands out for its commitment to prioritizing the needs and goals of its clients. Right from the initial assessment and throughout the entirety of the services provided, BTS adheres to assent-based practices, ensuring that clients and their families are active participants in goal development and treatment planning.

Dr. Burnett emphasizes the importance of client involvement, stating, “We consistently check in with what the important topics or concerns are for the client and family to ensure we are meeting those needs appropriately.” This transparent and inclusive approach promotes a collaborative environment where the voices and preferences of clients and their families are integral to shaping their therapeutic journey.

The utilization of ongoing assessments further underscores BTS’s commitment to tailoring services to meet individual needs. By continuously assessing the effectiveness of activities and environments, BTS ensures that the therapeutic experience aligns with each client’s preferences and support systems. This proactive approach enhances the efficacy of the services provided and reinforces a culture of responsiveness and adaptability.

Dedication to Continuous Learning

BTS encourages ongoing learning at every level in a dynamic field that continually evolves. Recognizing the imperative of staying at the forefront of knowledge, BTS actively promotes continuous learning through a variety of initiatives.

Collaboration with funders, attendance at conferences, research sharing, and partnerships with fellow professionals are some of the ways BTS ensures they remain updated with latest developments in ABA and mental health services. Dr. Burnett underlines this commitment, stating, “We strive to continue to be on the cutting edge of implementing services in order to maximize the effectiveness of treatment.”

BTS actively engages in collaborative team meetings that facilitate input from the entire team involved in each case. This inclusive approach ensures a collective wealth of knowledge is harnessed, allowing for a comprehensive and well-rounded perspective on individual cases. By promoting open dialogue and collaboration, BTS not only enhances the professional development of its team but also enriches the quality of care provided to clients.

Joining the Journey

Venturing into a career in therapy presents a number of opportunities for growth and learning. At BTS, the doors are wide open for individuals eager to jump into the field and cultivate their passion for therapy.

Behavior Interventionists serving as direct care staff in ABA, find a welcoming home at BTS—a place where many discover their deep connection to the world of therapy. According to Dr. Burnett, “We are always happy to mentor and provide support to those looking to get into the field. Please reach out to us, and we will tell you more about it!”

BTS recognizes the significance of hands-on experience, learning, and collaboration in shaping a fulfilling career in therapy. For those aspiring to make a meaningful impact in the field of therapy, BTS extends an invitation to join their journey—a journey marked by mentorship, support, and a shared passion for making a positive difference in the lives of individuals and families.

Commitment to Continuous Growth and Support

BTS envisions a future marked by continual growth, learning, and program expansion, fueled by a commitment to providing assistance and support to an increasing number of families. Dr. Burnett states, “Our goal is to continue to receive and provide training in order to be as effective as possible, and we want people to know that there are supports and services out there for them!”

Facing challenges alone is not a necessity at BTS. Dr. Burnett emphasizes the universality of struggles and difficulties, asserting that help is available for those navigating the healing process. Whether it’s concerns about developmental delays or navigating the complexities of parenting a child on the spectrum, BTS urges individuals not to face these challenges in isolation.

Dr. Burnett extends a compassionate message to parents, emphasizing the importance of seeking help if they suspect their child may be delayed or on the spectrum. The crucial role of early intervention in achieving optimal outcomes for children with delays is highlighted. Moreover, for parents dealing with the emotional toll of such circumstances, BTS encourages reaching out for support. Parenting, especially in the face of developmental challenges, can be challenging, and BTS aims to be a guiding light for families seeking assistance and understanding.
