Caitlin Hicks
Caitlin Hicks

Leadership in today’s time requires an extension beyond the boundary walls of traditional management. As the work continues to evolve, effective leaders must adapt to meet the complexities of a rapidly changing environment. This new era calls for leaders who prioritize connection, empathy and inclusivity, recognizing that success is no longer solely defined by authority but by the ability to inspire and engage teams.

In contrast to past leadership models that emphasized hierarchy and distance, contemporary leaders are expected to cultivate a culture of collaboration and acceptance. They must navigate the challenges posed by remote work and diverse generational perspectives, fostering an atmosphere where every voice is heard and valued. This shift demands leaders who are not only skilled communicators but also adept at building authentic relationships within their teams.

Amidst this evolving sector, Caitlin Hicks embraces these modern principles. As a Senior Talent Acquisition Partner at Main Line Health System, she exemplifies the new phase of leadership that prioritizes innovation and inclusivity.

Caitlin demonstrates her commitment to inclusivity through initiatives that promote the holistic development of her team and advocate for equity in the healthcare community, all while effectively managing her role and fostering a more compassionate healthcare system.

Let’s delve into the detailed interview insights below!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and describe your current role in your organization?

In my role, I recruit advanced practice providers for our health system, however during my career have recruited for almost all positions within a hospital. I’m involved in various projects aimed at enhancing our recruitment processes and improving employee engagement. Recently, I was part of the Transformation Team program, working closely with hospital executive leaders to drive organizational improvements. I also help spearheaded our employee referral program and participate in our new hire orientation to share insights about working at Main Line Health.

What inspired you to pursue a career in healthcare, and what has been your journey to your current position?

My journey began with a passion for helping people, but not in a clinical space, which naturally drew me to human resources and talent acquisition. Working in healthcare has been particularly inspiring because of the impact that effective talent management has on patient care and overall organizational success. I started as a Human Resources Support Specialist and progressively took on more complex roles, including project management and strategic initiatives. Each step, from EBS Healthcare to Penn Medicine and now Main Line Health, has deepened my understanding of the critical role HR plays in healthcare.

Can you share some of the trailblazing initiatives you have implemented in your organization to improve healthcare delivery?

I’ve played a key role in enhancing our organization’s social media presence, particularly in the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) space. I’ve developed innovative strategies to attract talent by leveraging various channels, including university partnerships, LinkedIn newsletters, TikTok, and Instagram. My approach has been to explore every possible avenue to effectively showcase the strengths and opportunities within our organization. As I finish up my master’s program at Temple University, I hope to bring more ideas and initiatives to help build a stronger talent program.

What are some of the biggest challenges you have faced in your role, and how have you addressed them?

One of the major challenges I face is gaining stakeholder buy-in for process improvements managed by other departments. My fast-paced nature and desire for immediate results can sometimes be counterproductive. I’m working on taking a step back to fully understand all aspects before proceeding, though it remains a personal challenge in a world that often prioritizes instant gratification.

How has digital technology transformed healthcare in your organization, and what future advancements do you foresee?

Digital technology has significantly transformed our recruitment processes through automation and improved data management. For example, we’ve leveraged ATS systems to enhance our candidate tracking and streamline our hiring process. Looking forward, I anticipate advancements in AI and machine learning will further revolutionize how we source and engage candidates, making our recruitment efforts even more efficient and targeted.

What steps have you taken to promote equity and inclusion within your organization and the broader healthcare community?

I’m involved in Main Line Health’s women’s development committee, which focuses on fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace. I also contribute to our HR initiatives that promote equity by ensuring our recruitment practices are inclusive and that we provide equal opportunities for all candidates. I led a distinctive hiring event modelled as a happy hour, which fostered a more relaxed and engaging atmosphere. This intimate gathering resulted in 83% of hires being diverse talent. We are now expanding our efforts by partnering with HBCUs and supporting internal staff through enhanced mobility opportunities.

What advice would you give to aspiring healthcare leaders who want to make a significant impact in the industry?

Embrace challenges as valuable opportunities for growth, seeing each obstacle as a chance to learn and improve. Keep in mind the reasons behind your passions and let that drive you. Surround yourself with supportive and inspiring individuals who can offer encouragement, and new perspectives, helping you stay motivated. REMAIN PERSISTENT even when faced with difficulties. Be prepared to adapt your strategies as needed, staying flexible to overcome evolving challenges.

What is your vision for the future of healthcare, and how do you plan to contribute to achieving it?

I envision a future where healthcare organizations are more agile, with a strong emphasis on both technological integration and personalized patient care. I plan to contribute by continuing to innovate in talent acquisition, ensuring we attract and retain the best talent to drive these advancements. By leading initiatives that enhance our recruitment strategies and foster a supportive work environment, I aim to support our organization’s mission to provide exceptional care and adapt to the evolving healthcare landscape.
