In an interview with Insights Care, Jeff Coffman, the President and Founder, talks about the transformative power of continuing medical education with CME Procedures and embarks on a journey of lifelong learning that will revolutionize the way you practice medicine.

Following are the excerpts from the interview:

Can you tell us about the history and mission of CME Procedures, LLC?

CME Procedures was founded in 2012. I’m a practicing emergency medicine physician assistant and noticed gaps in education in my field and with my peers. This gave me the idea of CME Procedures which started as a focus in emergency medicine and has since grown to all fields of medicine. Our mission is to improve the safety of providers, patients, and the quality of the patient experience. Our accredited medical education focuses on these issues.

Brief us about yourself and your journey to becoming a part of the company.

I have a management role with a large emergency medicine group in central Ohio.  Working with credentialing, and onboarding new hires, I saw gaps and needs in available continuing medical education. Our company started by filling these gaps in procedures and skills. We have since grown into all areas of medicine. We provide education to providers and students.

How do you ensure that the continuing education activities you provide are of high quality and relevant to medical and pharmacy professionals?

We have strict standards and a team of medical professionals that reviews all of our content to ensure it follows evidence-based medicine and is current with treatment plans. We are accredited by the ACCME and AANP and meet all of their requirements to issue accredited continuing medical education.

What types of continuing education activities do you offer?

We offer CME that is pertinent to all medical fields, although our focus is emergency medicine, internal medicine, trauma, urgent care, and providers that take care of patients with acute conditions. Our CME ranges from hands-on skills to case reviews, patient safety, and pharmacology.

Brief us about the different domains that the company’s learning programs are structured in.

We are the leader in CME for hands-on skills and procedures. We offer the unique ability to learn skills online on your own time and pace and have live events for further learning.

Our online platform is easy to navigate, stores the provider’s certificates, and allows for multiple-user access.  This allows providers to complete and review their CME on their own time wherever they want and unlimited access.

How do you measure the effectiveness of your continuing education programs in terms of improving patient outcomes?

We can measure the effectiveness of CME programs through patient outcomes and metrics with some of the provider groups we work closely with. This allows us to have access to their safety standards, procedure success rate, etc. We work closely with several medical groups and have been able to show improvement across the entire patient care spectrum with our modules.

We also ask providers to give examples of how the CME improved their practice and or safety and what barriers exist that can limit improvement.

What challenges or gaps exist within the industry? How does the company turn them into opportunities for growth?

Our biggest challenge was the pandemic. This canceled out live events for a few years. We are now getting back to live conferences and hands-on skills.

At the same time, we have been providing online CME for over 10 years, so when the pandemic occurred, we had hundreds of hours of education already available for home use. We also gave thousands of hours of free CME to over 40 schools during this time to help them bridge the gap when medical rotations were canceled due to COVID-19.

Tell us about a few success stories that the company’s services have contributed to.

We started a program with our local school system in Westerville Ohio. This provides access and mentors to high school students interested in medical fields. We also hold an annual career and skills day with their Health Care Pathway students. This promotes excitement and allows students the opportunity to interact with multiple medical professionals. The program now has students that are in medical school, nursing programs, lab techs, physician assistant programs, and more.

During the pandemic, we worked with over 40 PA and NP programs and gave them free access to our content for students to continue to learn when their rotations were canceled.

We continue to be very active within our local community and the national medical community.  I have recently just started my elected term as Chair of the Advanced Practice Clinicians (APC) Council for Team Health, which has over 4000 advanced practice providers.

What would be your advice to budding entrepreneurs and enthusiasts who desire to venture into the industry?

My advice would be to not be discouraged with baby steps and to go slow. We were excited when we first started the company and wanted to grow fast. This at times caused our quality and standards to suffer. I learned to take a thoughtful pause and move steadily. Celebrate and enjoy your success and use that momentum to energize your next steps. Steady growth allows you to maintain high standards and customer service.
