The European Copernicus network has reported that recent days have seen the highest global temperatures ever recorded, with some areas reaching up to 50 degrees Celsius. The world is currently in the grip of a severe heatwave, prompting United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to warn of an “extreme heat epidemic” driven by climate change, affecting billions of people with deadly heat waves.

In such extreme conditions, air conditioners (AC) have become essential for comfort and relief. However, prolonged use of AC during sleep can have negative health effects.

Health Effects of Sleeping with AC On are

– Dry Eyes: AC removes moisture from the air, leading to dryness, itching, and discomfort in the eyes.

– Lethargy: Cool temperatures can lower metabolic rates and slow down body processes, resulting in fatigue and drowsiness.

– Dehydration: Dry air can cause rapid moisture loss, leading to dehydration if not compensated by drinking enough fluids.

– Dry or Itchy Skin:Low humidity can cause the skin to lose moisture, resulting in dryness, flakiness, and irritation.

– Headaches: Sudden temperature changes and cold, dry air can trigger headaches and sinus congestion.

– Respiratory Issues: Cold and dry air can irritate airways, worsening conditions like asthma and allergies.

– Allergies and Asthma: Air conditioning systems can harbor allergens like dust, pollen, and mold, triggering allergic reactions.

– Noise Pollution: The constant humming of AC units can disrupt sleep patterns and cause annoyance.

– Infectious Diseases: Poorly maintained air conditioning systems can spread bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

– Indoor Pollutants: AC can accumulate pollutants like dust, pet dander, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), causing respiratory irritation and health issues.
