Ambulance Victoria (AV) is encouraging men to take care of their physical and emotional health by booking a health check-up during International Men’s Health Week. According to the Australian Men’s Health Forum, 50 men die every day in Australia due to preventable causes.
Anthony Carlyon, AV Executive Director of Operational Communications, stated that Men’s Health Week aims to educate men on how to safeguard and improve their health and well-being. “Too many Australian men are dying too young, and this week is about raising awareness of the full range of physical, mental and emotional conditions men can suffer from,” he stated.
“This Men’s Health Week, we call on all men to book in for a health check, to make a plan for action to improve their health and well-being, and to tell their mates to do the same.”
According to AV, heart disease is the leading cause of death among males in Australia. Andrew Keenan, AV Director of Patient Safety and Experience, stated that this week should serve as a reminder for men to have their heart health examined on a regular basis.
“Many heart attacks and strokes can be prevented through healthy behaviours like eating a heart healthy diet, being active, maintaining a healthy weight and being smoke free,” he stated.
“Four in five heart-related deaths under the age of 65 are men, so it’s crucial that men have regular Heart Health Checks with their GP.”Heart Health Checks take only 20 minutes and assess your risk of having a heart attack or stroke in the next five years, giving you the opportunity to make lifestyle changes.
Men’s Health Week is celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2024 from 10-16 June. More information is available on visit www.amhf.org.au.
