The integration of digital technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI) is significantly transforming India’s public health landscape, particularly in primary healthcare. The seamless incorporation of advanced digital tools and AI is enabling healthcare providers to make better-informed decisions through technologies such as image recognition and predictive analytics. This shift is leading to earlier disease detection, more accurate treatments, and improved patient outcomes, demonstrating a strong commitment to delivering innovative, comprehensive primary healthcare solutions. Digital innovation is recognized as a vital element in fostering a healthier India.
These innovations extend beyond clinical applications to also streamline administrative processes, making healthcare more patient-centric. Mobile health applications and the government’s eSanjeevani National Telemedicine Service have revolutionized access to healthcare, particularly in remote areas. Patients can now receive consultations and diagnostics without the need to travel long distances, significantly reducing barriers to care. Additionally, wearable devices and mobile health apps empower patients to actively manage their health by monitoring vital signs, tracking treatment adherence, and focusing on overall wellness. These tools promote preventive healthcare and foster stronger patient-provider relationships.
India’s journey from Digitalized Health and Wellness Centers (DHWC) to Comprehensive Primary Healthcare (CPHC) exemplifies its commitment to transforming primary care. Initiated by WISH in 2017, DHWC introduced a ‘3 Tab model’ (Nurse, Doctor, Pharmacist) across 1,000 centers. However, challenges arose due to the absence of National Digital Health Blueprint (NDHB) standards, Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) building blocks, and the rapid pace of technological change, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
To address these issues, the Smart DHWC was developed, integrating NDHB standards, ABDM building blocks, AI capabilities, and a robust clinical knowledge base. This enhanced model prioritizes preventive health measures, improves data management, and elevates patient experiences through technologically advanced health centers.
Aligned with the government’s priorities for Comprehensive Primary Health Care through Health and Wellness Centres (Ayushman Arogya Mandirs), a new ABDM-compliant ‘CPHC platform’ has been developed. Declared as Digital Public Good (DPG), the platform includes a patient application and an Electronic Health Records (EHR) application for clinics. The platform enables RFID tagging and tracking of patients and the monitoring of vitals through IoT wearables, with advanced healthcare plug-ins integrated into the EHR for auto-populating health data.
