London, Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) announced on Saturday a new partnership with Asda supermarkets to promote early detection of mouth cancer through its oral hygiene products. Starting in July, Asda’s branded toothpaste and mouthwash bottles in over 500 stores across the country will feature NHS advice on the symptoms of mouth cancer.
Millions of these products will encourage people to contact their general practitioner or dentist if they notice any potential signs of concern. “Early detection is key in the fight against mouth cancers to save and improve lives,” said Mahesh Kumar, the Indian-origin president of the Mouth Cancer Foundation and an Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon. “Any cancer caught early usually incurs a less invasive treatment plan. It is incredibly important to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms among the general public. The NHS advice on oral hygiene products will go a long way to highlighting the importance of looking after our oral health and acting sooner when something out of the ordinary is discovered.”
The NHS stated that its partnership with Asda aims to raise awareness of symptoms that could indicate cancer, such as an ulcer that lasts for three weeks or more. Other symptoms of mouth cancer include a white or red patch in the mouth that does not heal within three weeks, a lump or swelling in the mouth, jaw, or neck that persists for more than three weeks, and difficulty swallowing, chewing, or moving the jaw or tongue. Numbness in the tongue or other areas of the mouth, a sensation of something being stuck in the throat, a chronic sore throat or hoarseness that lasts for more than six weeks, and unexplained loosening of teeth can also be possible signs of cancer.
