In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, an Ebola outbreak has been proclaimed four months after the last one ended.
On April 5, a case was verified in a 31-year-old man. He got admitted to an Ebola treatment center on Thursday, but he died just hours later. Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, the World Health Organization’s regional director for Africa, said: “We don’t have much time on our hands. We are now playing catch-up after the sickness got a two-week head start.”
The Democratic Republic of the Congo has experienced 14 Ebola outbreaks since 1976 when the virus was first detected. Officials have made a statement that the patient who died had a safe and dignified burial as part of the current outbreak’s efforts.
More than 70 of his contacts are being tracked down, and vaccination campaigns in Mbandaka will be ramped up. It spreads by coming into contact with an infected person’s bodily fluids or contaminated items.
