Monkeypox infection
On Wednesday, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health said that a single case of monkeypox virus infection had been verified in a man who had just been to Canada.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) claimed its tests confirmed the virus was monkeypox on Wednesday afternoon.
“The case poses no concern to the public, and the individual is hospitalized and in good condition,” the state agency said, adding that it was working with the CDC and relevant municipal boards of health to do contact tracing.
The Canadian Public Health Agency issued a statement late Wednesday saying it is aware of the monkeypox cases in Europe and is closely monitoring the situation, but that no cases have been recorded yet.
Monkeypox is a rare viral infection that is similar to human smallpox but is milder. It is usually seen in the west and central Africa. It was first discovered in the 1970s in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In the previous decade, the number of cases in West Africa has grown.
Fever, headaches, and skin rashes that begin on the face and progress to the rest of the body are among the symptoms.
