MEDICATION PACKAGING SOLUTIONS LLC | Stephen Spreadbury | Founder

The key to living a long and healthy life is taking your medications on time. Many seniors—by adhering to the doctor’s prescribed instructions on level and time of dose intake—have managed to live a life hospital free. At Medication Packaging Solutions LLC, a medication management company, the goal is to help seniors take the right medication, and the right dose at the right time.

The company supports seniors with drug adherence through its easy-to-fill-at-home, blister cards and pouches. These blister cards are disposable multi-med & single dose delivery that allows you to push through the foil backing to release your medications. They are a perfect tool for those with poor memory, as they can recognize that their dose has been taken, by pointing out the broken foil.

In an interview with Insights Care, Stephen Spreadbury, the Founder, shares in depth about the company’s operations in improving drug adherence among seniors.

Following are the excerpts from the interview:

Kindly tell us the source of inspiration. What led you to venture into Medication Management Industry?

My mother had Parkinson’s and had a hard time taking her medications correctly. At the time I was working for a blister card medication packaging company called Omnicell. I was part of the marketing department, and we were developing these cards that were used by pharmacies around the world. I started to use them for my mother and saw a marked improvement in her ability to take her medications correctly and on time. I thought that other consumers, seniors and caregivers could also benefit from these clean, sealed and disposable medication blister cards.

Brief us about yourself and shed some light on your role and responsibility at the company.

I’m a marketing media specialist, so I’m a photographer, video producer, layout artist and web designer so I was able to design the company sales website as well as all of the media.  I also source other brands of blister cards as well as other products that help consumers to take their medications correctly and on time.

What are the mission, vision and values shared by the company?

Nearly 100,000 emergency room visits by older adults (starting at age 65) occur annually due to adverse drug reactions and over 40 percent of people over age 65 take five to nine medications every day. Many of these deaths and hospital visits could be avoided if we could take our medications correctly. My mission is to sell products that help consumers to take their medications correctly, keep them out of the emergency room, and to help them to have a longer healthier life.

Tell us about the core products and services that the company offers to support the healthcare needs of the patients. How are these different from other companies in the market?

I sell pharmacy-grade multi-med medication blister cards.  I sell several different brands by well-known American-based manufacturing companies including Omnicell’s SureMed brand, the Medicine-On-Time Multi-Dose brand and the QUBE brand. Most consumer-based companies sell only old plastic pill boxes that are hard to open, get dirty, and when dropped can send your pills scattering across the floor.

Brief us about the rising need for medication management in the modern era. How will it impact the way patients are being treated?

According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, around 81 percent of seniors take prescription medication. In the United States, some of the impacts of non-adherence account for 125,000 deaths per year, they account for 25% of nursing home admissions and 20% of adverse drug events. There are more seniors alive today than at any time in history and their ability to take their medications correctly each day is what’s going to keep them out of the hospital.  I believe these multi-med and single-dose medication blister cards that I sell are a low-cost way for seniors to correctly take their medications.  As we say, we’ll help you to take the right medication, and the right dose at the right time.

What specific R&D operations is your company leading at present? Why do you find them essential in developing or improving healthcare solutions?

While we don’t do any specific product development, we keep a close eye on our manufacturing partners for new products that we can utilize for our consumer and pharmacy customers.

What endeavors is the company currently pursuing to improve its service measures for the clients?

We recently updated our website’s shopping cart to make it easier for customers to place an order, also any orders placed by 1 pm EST now ship on the same day.

What advice would you like to give to budding entrepreneurs and enthusiasts who desire to venture into the Medication Management Industry?

Pharmacy and medication management will continue to grow over the next several years as more and more baby boomers retire and move into their 70s and 80s.  It’s a growing business for any entrepreneur simplifying medication management.

How do you envision scaling the company’s services and operations in 2023 and beyond?

In 2023 we’re increasing our marketing efforts towards independent pharmacies and we’ve also just started selling our cards on Amazon.

Please mention client testimonials or recognitions that your company may have attained along its journey to success.

Yes, we’ve received quite a few testimonials from our consumer customers. Below are a few:

My father, who has dementia, recently started “rearranging” his medicine in his plastic dispenser. He and my mother are still independent and live on their own, so keeping his medicine secure 100% of the time is not possible. We found your product after researching pharmacy packaging. It is week three of using your product. He is doing great opening, dispensing, and taking his medicine on his own. We no longer have to worry about him over-medicating himself.  A quick visual of his medicine pack is so easy on our daily home checks.  We also can package several weeks and mark the dates on them. Thank you for your product!

My parents are 92 and have around-the-clock care. The blister packs enable me to keep the medicine separate and for the helpers to be sure the correct medicines have been administered correctly. I cannot imagine keeping the medicine and administering it any other way.

My mother is 95 years old and lives two hours from me. She is not able to take her medication on her own. Several years ago I started using pill caddies. They worked great until she dropped the caddy on the floor and the pills went everywhere. She would sit with the pill bottles and put them back in the bottles based on the descriptions and often got them in the wrong bottles. I searched for some alternate packaging and found your product. It was a great choice for her since I came in weekly and packaged her pills and she was able to keep track of and take her medication. It works great now that she has 24-hour care and different caretakers are coming in. Thank you for providing such a wonderful product for children who are caregivers.
