Export COVID-19 Vaccines to Underprivileged Countries: WTO’s urge to U.S. U.K.

Amidst the second wave of COVID-19 hitting different countries across the world with more or less impact, the chief of the World Trade Organization (WTO) has urged privileged countries to step-in to aid vaccination drives in poorer nations.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of WTO restated the need for the rich countries such as U.S. and U.K. to ensure the underprivileged countries are not left out from the COVID-19 vaccination drive if the world wants to fight the pandemic.

The chief’s call comes out on the ground of the inoculation drives running throughout the world at diverse rates where poorer countries have seen struggling with enough vaccine supplies to fight COVID-19 spread.

Furthermore, the chief also praised the efforts of the EU, China, and India for exporting a significant number of doses to other nations to help them get through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Among the worldwide development of COVID-19 vaccines, more than a billion doses have been globally administered, over 400 million of these doses have been given to citizens in the US, UK, and European Union.
