A thriving society, and healthy community is the result of efficient healthcare system enabled by transformational leadership and technological advancements such as JEDSY’s Medical Drones; a revolutionary drone delivery system that is faster and more cost-effective than car delivery. Drone delivery technology that optimizes medical supplies by reducing the cost, and turnaround time—from 185-minute-long delivery to only 34 minutes, required by healthcare companies (and countries where there is a lack of infrastructure) to receive necessary medical supplies.

Jedsy, a Switzerland-based technology company that develops high-end multipurpose drones for delivering vital medical shipments via the fastest, most customer friendly and reliable aircraft delivery service in the world—committed to saving lives by making medical deliveries fast and efficient. They aim to be a dominant player in the medical drone space, by providing effective healthcare emergency and courier services to laboratories and hospitals.

Keeping the motto as its core, “Delivery where it matters, when it matters,” Herbert Weirather, the Chief Executive Officer, along with Mirko Cesena, the Head of Test Operations, innovated the concept of delivery through Jedsy Glider (drone); an unmanned aerial vehicle- delivery drone, who delivers packages for emergency or express delivery situations.

What makes the Jedsy Glider unique is its advanced and automated features which make it capable of delivering payload in tough terrains, distant areas and destinations with poor infrastructure facilities with a high success rate. The Glider has a unique method and design, with a patented loading and landing station that makes it able to dock directly to a window or balcony—also vertically, eliminating the need for customers to dedicate an open space for landing, take off or charging, thus making it a sustainable and long-term solution to efficient medical delivery –these features put Jedsy in the global limelight for sustainable medical delivery.

Jedsy’s innovation can be a remedy for the future of healthcare as:

  • Reach Anywhere: It can deliver life-saving medications, blood supplies, or anything below 2 to 3 kg, no matter how remote the place would be.
  • Saving Costs: Its gliders and mailboxes are fully electric, unlike cars that have high fuel, maintenance and labor costs.
  • Saving Time: Jedsy understands how one second can make a huge difference when in a life-death situation. Conditions such as sepsis and myocardial infarction benefit from its high-quality emergency care.

Let’s dive in to know more about Jedsy’s contribution to easing the lives of patients and improving the efficiency of healthcare deliveries.

Source of Inspiration

For Herbert Weirather, the CEO, the inspiration for venturing into the medical drone industry stems from a deeply personal place—the birth of his two daughters. After holding them in his arms for the first time, he couldn’t help but think about their future and the future of all the children. He wanted to create a future where every single person has access to the medicine they need, regardless of where they live or their financial situation. He aims to set a step for his daughters, for a future where the world moves towards a sustainable delivery method, where drones are utilized to transport essential medicine to people in need.

Role of Drones in the Healthcare Industry

Drones can play a crucial role in the healthcare industry, offering a variety of benefits that can greatly improve the speed, efficiency and accessibility of medical treatment.

“One of the most significant advantages of using drones in healthcare is their ability to greatly improve the speed of delivery, particularly when it comes to the delivery of medical samples – a field where we have set our focus on,” says Weirather. In traditional methods, the delivery of medical samples to a laboratory for analysis used to take a while, especially in densely populated urban areas, remote areas or developing countries. This delay can significantly impact the diagnosis and treatment of patients, as critical information about their health is not available in a timely manner.

The company’s Jedsy Drones, however, can cover large distances quickly, reducing the time it takes for samples to be analyzed. The transportation of samples to and from laboratories by these drones in real-time, allowing for faster diagnoses and treatment. This can be especially important in emergency situations, where every second counts. For example to transport samples of blood and other bodily fluids to a laboratory for testing. This can help to detect diseases such as COVID, HIV, and other infectious diseases, allowing for early diagnosis and treatment. Jedsy understands that time is of the essence, particularly when it comes to critical deliveries such as medicine or samples. That’s why it is dedicated to revolutionizing the delivery process and developing new technologies to ensure that its drones can deliver packages with precision and speed.

Another important role of using drones in healthcare is their ability to reach remote or hard-to-reach areas. At Jedsy, the Jedsy Drones can easily navigate through difficult terrain or inclement weather, delivering medicine and medical supplies directly to patients who might otherwise have difficulty accessing healthcare. This can be especially beneficial in developing countries or in emergency situations where traditional delivery methods may be hindered. A great example of this is Jedsy’s current mission in Malawi where the team’s goal to achieve over 50,000 deliveries in the shortest time possible. The country faces significant challenges in terms of access to healthcare, particularly in rural areas. Many communities are located far from healthcare facilities and are difficult to reach by traditional means of transportation. That’s where Jedsy wants to step in, by utilizing its cutting-edge drone technology to deliver medicine and medical supplies directly to patients in need. Jedsy drones are equipped with GPS and autonomous navigation capabilities, allowing for precise and efficient delivery. A side benefit that comes with it is that it has created new job opportunities in drone technology in Malawi, where unemployment rates are high. Not only are these jobs providing a source of income for individuals, but they are also helping to improve the overall economic development of the country.

Sustainable Advantage that Comes Along with Drone Delivery

Although the drone delivery system is turning the healthcare sector more efficient, but in Weirather’s opinion, “Drone delivery doesn’t stop by being just faster and more efficient than delivery methods that we are used to. One of the key advantages of using drones in healthcare is their ability to greatly reduce the environmental impact of delivery.” Compared to traditional methods such as ground transportation which are powered by fossil fuels, drones are powered by electricity and can travel much more efficiently. This leads to a reduction in the carbon footprint of delivery and can help to create a more sustainable future.

For example, a tonne heavy truck can emit up to seven metric tons of CO2 per year, while a drone emits significantly less and has an indeed smaller environmental footprint. “In my opinion, a crucial aspect to consider in the current global scenario where climate change is a pressing issue, and a conscious effort is needed to reduce the carbon footprint,” he adds.

Challenges Revolutionizing the Drone Delivery Process

Revolutionizing the process of drone delivery has been a challenging but exciting journey for Weirather and his team. They have been focusing on identifying and addressing the key challenges that have hindered the widespread adoption of drone delivery in the past.

Traditional methods such as using a parachute or repelling, have significant disadvantages, as large open spaces are required. Especially in cities, these areas are rare, not available at all, or too far away from the receiver. Furthermore, there has been no reliable system so far that not only enables the delivery but even more important – the collection of deliveries.

“To overcome this challenge, we came up with the innovative idea of direct delivery to a window or balcony on a specially developed and patented landing station,” says Weirather. This approach has several advantages. By delivering directly to these specific points, the need for the package to land on the ground is eliminated, and the risk of damage or loss is reduced. Additionally, this method allows for much more precise and accurate delivery, ensuring that the package reaches its intended destination safely and on time. Jedsy believes that every delivery should be treated with the same level of importance, whether it’s a small package or a lifesaving medication.

Furthermore, this approach also opens up new possibilities for Jedsy in the drone delivery industry. For example, it allows for delivery in urban areas where landing space is limited, and it also allows for delivery in restricted areas such as hospitals or airports. By delivering directly to a window or balcony, Jedsy can also ensure privacy and security, as the package can be received by the intended recipient only. “But we didn’t want to stop our innovation by just delivering. The most unique feature of our window and balcony delivery is that we are also able to collect deliveries. This allows for a more streamlined and efficient process, as customers can have packages picked up right from their window,” adds Weirather.

Safety-Privacy-Minimal Noise: Three Pillars of Excellence.

Beyond Jedsy’s pursuit to revolutionize, it strives to not only push the boundaries of what is possible with drone delivery but also to ensure that it is done so with integrity and in a way that benefits the customers and society as a whole. That’s why Jedsy has defined three main principles that carve the way to excellence: Safety, Privacy and Minimal Noise.

Jedsy understands that safety is of the utmost importance when it comes to drone delivery, which is why its drones are equipped with a fault-tolerant system. That means every component has a backup to avoid a single point of failure. Additionally, it thoroughly tests its software in highly realistic simulations to ensure that it can handle unexpected scenarios.

To ensure privacy, Jedsy’s operators only have access to the information that they need to see and everything else in the camera stream is blurred at takeoff and landing. That continues with strict data retention policies, with all onboard videos only being stored for one day. All cameras are covered when docked at the landing station, ensuring the privacy of the customers.

In addition, the company is constantly working to reduce noise by enhancing the software, aerodynamics and reducing weight. Jedsy’s drone is designed to glide during 90% of the operation, which greatly reduces noise pollution.

Looking Ahead in 2023

In addition to the safety, privacy and minimal noise that Jedsy prioritizes, “We believe that cost efficiency is one of the most significant advantages of our service, says Weirather. “By reducing transportation costs and carbon emissions, we aim to save our customers millions of dollars and make a positive impact on the environment. With these objectives, we are confident that we will be able to scale our operations in 2023 and expand our reach to even more customers in the healthcare sector. We are excited about the possibilities that this technology offers and are determined to continue to innovate and improve our service to meet the needs of our customers,” he concludes.
