Russia plans to launch world’s first COVID-19 vaccine in mid-August

On Monday, Russian scientists claimed that they hope to launch the first coronavirus vaccine worldwide. On Sunday, Russian Sechenov University announced that the state-run Gamalei Institute for Epidemiology and Microbiology has successfully completed clinical trials of COVID-19 vaccine.

Elena Smolyarchuk, the head and chief researcher at the Sechenov University Center for Clinical Research on Medications said that the clinical trial of the vaccine was finished and the data has shown the effectiveness of the product.

“The research has been completed and it proved that the vaccine is safe,” Smolyarchuk was quoted as saying by TASS of its trial.

Gamalei center’s Director Alexander Gintsburg told TASS that it hopes that the vaccine would ‘enter into civil circulation’ between 12 and 14 August. He also added that private companies may begin mass production by September.
