Q: What were the circumstances that led to your decision to leave home and take care of yourself?
A: During my teenage years, I found it difficult to get along with my mother. Additionally, I had the responsibility of looking after my troublesome younger brother. This strained relationship at home led me to run away from home and even skip school to work and make money. I felt the need to take care of myself and create a better life.
Q: Can you share a significant turning point in your journey that changed your life forever?
A: A turning point in my life came when I was working at Labor Ready in Georgetown. On one particular day, while working at a construction site, I felt unwell and decided to visit a clinic. It was there that I received unexpected news—I was pregnant. This revelation shocked me to the core as I was only 16 and living a turbulent life. It was in that moment I realized that I had to save Sarah, my unborn child.
Q: How did you react when you shared the news of your pregnancy with your mother?
A: Upon hearing the news of my pregnancy, I mustered up the courage to call my mother from a payphone. However, instead of receiving the support I desperately needed, she yelled at me and offered to send money for an abortion. The harshness of her response left me feeling alone and abandoned.
Q: What steps did you take after learning about your pregnancy?
A: Determined to provide a better future for my daughter, I embarked on a journey to turn my life around. I walked miles until someone offered me a ride to my boyfriend’s family’s juke joint outside of Taylor, TX. There, I revealed the news of my pregnancy to him, and despite our uncertainties, he embraced me and provided much-needed support.
Q: How did your legal status and probation affect your situation?
A: At the time, I was a ward of the court and on juvenile probation. To prevent my child from being placed in foster care, I made the decision to turn myself in. I was sent to a girls’ home named Nikki’s in Houston, Texas. The authorities at Nikki’s made it clear that I needed to secure a job and demonstrate my ability to care for my baby if I wanted to keep her.
Q: What were your experiences while working at Popeyes Chicken in Houston?
A: I managed to secure a job at Popeyes Chicken on Fannin Street, across from Sears and Jack in the Box in Houston’s Third Ward. Despite the challenges I faced, I worked diligently until the day I went into labor. This job became an essential part of my journey toward adulthood and independence.
Q: Can you share a memorable moment during the birth of your daughter?
A: On the day my daughter was born, my father, aunt, and grandmother were present. However, my grandmother, Rosemary, uttered hurtful words, saying, “Your father will never love a Kaffer baby, you know!” Her comment, filled with ugliness, stood out starkly on what should have been a beautiful day.
Q: How did these experiences shape your understanding of family history, trauma, and identity?
A: My journey through family history, trauma, and identity was challenging and transformative. It taught me the importance of resilience and self-reliance. Despite the strained relationships and negative experiences, I fought to create a better life for my daughter, Sarah. I discovered the strength within me to break free from the cycle of trauma and redefine my identity as a loving and dedicated mother.
