Mark Boyce | CEO & Founder Scribe Technology Solutions

Headquartered in Naples, FL, Scribe Technology Solutions empowers healthcare providers in creating and managing medical records. Scribe is a back-office solutions provider that focuses on productivity, profitability, and patient care for healthcare professionals. Its innovative cloud-based tools enable providers to simplify their back-office workflows while enhancing flexibility and control. The company allows providers to capture, create, monetize, analyse, communicate, and collaborate on clinical documentation.

Today, Scribe is transforming healthcare by simplifying workflows, increasing physician’s productivity, making information more accessible and valuable.

The Visionary Leader

Mark D. Boyce is the CEO and President of Scribe Technology Solutions. It was Mark’s former success in the management of organizations that led to the inception of Scribe, with a mission was simplify healthcare through innovative technologies. From founding his own Internet company to helping organizations get online in the early days of the internet to developing the winning dot.com strategy that led to yesmail.com’s successful IPO and subsequent $770 million acquisition, Mark has always been at the forefront of strategic thinking.

He has more than two decades of management experience in finance, operations, marketing, and technology with companies such as IBM, where he helped in starting the IBM PC division, and later at Anixter, where he helped formulate the strategy that fuelled their growth from a $500 million company to $1.5 billion company.

Mark holds a B.A. in Economics and Computer Science from Colgate University and an M.B.A. from Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. Currently, he is the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Dean College in Franklin, MA. In his spare time, he enjoys skiing, golf, cooking, travelling with his kids, and writing about his entrepreneurial adventures.

The Inception Story

In 2001, Mark entered the healthcare field and saw that very little of the wealth of information that is generated during a patient and healthcare provider encounter is used. The data often was captured and then filed away.  He also observed that both providers and patients would benefit by combining technology to capture and, later, to manipulate and analyse that information.

Boyce and Scribe’s team together wanted to look and resolve the concerns in healthcare as the technology was inefficient in solving the issues presented to providers. Hence, Scribe first looked at the more efficient ways to complete clinical documentation focusing on Electronic Medical Records (EMRs) and patient encounters. Recently, the company has discovered solutions to improve the billing, coding, and revenue cycle management solutions for all healthcare providers.

The quick advent and widespread adoption of iPhones and Android devices provided a ‘form factor’ that providers were already comfortably using. This enabled Scribe to take a big leap forward to efficiently connect technology to the providers, giving them a seamless platform that would improve their profitability, productivity, and patient care.

Superior Solutions

Scribe delivers various unique services to its clients. It includes Scribe Create, which is a completely family of patient encounter workflow solutions to register, manage, and communicate clinical documentation. Scribe Analyze is another innovative approach that uses the next generation of data and information management technologies with an innovative tool to improve efficiencies for providers that will increase their profitability and productivity.

One of its comprehensive solutions, Scribe Monetize, enhances medical coding and billing workflows to ensure the encounter documentation is optimized to clearly support the provider’s billing, resulting in fewer denials and increased revenue. LiveScribe gives the option of having a remote, virtual scribe listen and record the patient’s encounter in real time, resulting in the provider having more focus on the patient. It also provides faster and accurate documentation as the EMR is completed by the scribe during the encounter. LiveScribe connects providers directly with a remote scribe who can work directly on the EMR and narrative while the provider is in the exam or in consultation with the patient. It also allows recording after the patient leaves, and the scribe can complete the encounter using the provider’s recording. This is a combination of asynchronous and live scribing.

ScribeMobile: A Unique Feature

ScribeMobile is an app for both Android and iOS devices that gives physicians greater freedom to focus on their patients instead of being tied to their computers and keyboards. Recognizing the prevalence of mobile devices throughout all the areas of life, ScribeMobile gives providers the ability to capture patient encounters quickly and efficiently, and the ability to review, approve, and access patient documents and schedules at any time and any place. The users simply speak into their device and the technology does the rest.

With the addition of LiveScribe to ScribeMobile, providers can further extend the capabilities of their devices by connecting to a remote (virtual) scribe in real time to complete encounters.

Scribe’s team is excited and energized by the mission of bringing a dramatic change in the healthcare industry for the better. They believe that through the development of complimentary EMR solutions, Scribe enables physicians to focus on the patient care instead of focusing on the compliance with government mandated electronic health record creation and management.

 Remarkable Mission and Values

Scribe’s set of values and beliefs that sets it apart:

Change Agents:We are difference makers who believe we will transform the healthcare industry by how we work and what we do”, says Boyce.

Engaged:  Scribe strives to know EMRs inside and out and understand each client’s unique practices and requirements. This helps them to create intuitive solutions that improve patient outcomes and the bottom line while satisfying compliance requirements.

Work for fun & profit: Scribe believes that fun and profit are not mutually exclusive. It also considers that if we do our jobs well, customers will love working with us and gladly support and celebrate our success.

Scribe considers that its smaller size and limited bureaucracy allows it to be ‘fleet-footed’ so the company can move more quickly than its competitors. Boyce compares this to building race cars in the way that Scribe takes the proven technology components and puts them together into proprietary solutions to quickly deliver outstanding and innovative products.

Bringing High-end Communication and Patient Engagement

Being at the receiving end of healthcare can be a very stressful experience for many patients.  When a provider is too busy looking at a computer screen and not looking at their patient, communication suffers. To overcome these issues, Scribe’s solutions, and especially ScribeMobile, allow providers to restore that personal touch in patient engagement and build stronger communications. The company’s solutions also ensure that the patient encounter is captured in a more accurate and thorough manner, improving the level of medical care. Scribe’s solutions also give providers a simpler way to communicate patient data with other providers for referrals, ordering extra testing, and prescribing medications.

Scribe believes that the ability to collaborate and share information with other providers, patients, and caregivers is the key to the future of streamlining healthcare and improving outcomes.  Soon, the company’s mobile-based technology will make this collaboration a simple and secure reality. Instead of faxing thousands of documents, waiting for results, or playing telephone tag, collaborative additions to ScribeMobile will make today’s patient portals relics of the stone age.

Astounding Client Experiences

Scribe’s clients are represented by a variety of size practices and types of specialities.  Scribe demonstrates the flexibility to work with the client:

  • A large physician group was in the process of reviewing EMRs and considering switching to a different program. The group, then, had some providers using different EMRs than the others, and some physicians continued using paper. The group engaged with Scribe and put all providers on ScribeMobile. The providers were able to continue their workflow as they had been doing – no need to lose time retraining on a new EMR, incur that expense, and provider satisfaction improved along with their productivity.
  • Scribe recently started working with behavioral health clients. Traditionally, this specialty is not paid as well as others, but their case load is much higher and often includes traveling from location to location. Traveling cut into their time to complete documentation of their patient encounters. Now, these behavioral health professionals are using ScribeMobile, which they can use anywhere or anytime. The encounter narratives are typically much longer than with other specialties and they can now complete this task while on the road.
  • A client group with providers in multiple locations had a problem with the providers doing minimum work to close the encounter. After Scribe enrolled a portion of this group in a pilot program, the group found that reimbursements improved, denials decreased, provider productivity and profitability increased as did patient satisfaction. After seeing the success of the trial group and sharing the results with all locations, the entire group enrolled in Scribe’s services and continues to see improved financial and patient care outcomes.

 Envisioning a Bright Future

Scribe believes that the only constant thing in the healthcare industry is that it is always evolving. Scribe’s agility and flexibility proves to be strong assets to be able to adapt to the fast pace of this change. The company strives to pave its path through continuous innovation and enhancements. Soon, Scribe will be partnering with Amazon Web Services to include talking extensively with Amazon product managers and working together in the belief that voice enabled technologies will continue to drive productivity in healthcare.

Scribe will launch an Alexa enabled version of ScribeMobile, pending Amazon’s finalization of making Alexa HIPAA compliant. A provider will be able to call up information on Alexa to record patient encounters. Also, the company would be focusing on building voice-driven capabilities, which will be an integral part of the healthcare provider office in the future using any device the provider chooses.
