Reports say that the African Union (AU) intends to buy up to 110 million COVID-19 vaccines from Moderna Inc in an arrangement brokered in part by the White House.

The AU’s doses are anticipated to be delivered over the coming months, with almost 15 million arriving before the end of 2021, 35 million in the first quarter of 2022, and up to 60 million in the second quarter of 2022.

Although the new shipments are well below what the AU needs to vaccinate all its 1.3 billion people, who have had far less access to the lifesaving vaccines than more privileged parts of the world.
