US doctors perform brain surgery on a baby which is still in womb, First in the World

CNN reports that a pioneering brain surgery was carried out by a group of American doctors to treat a rare abnormality in the brain’s blood vessels on a baby still in the womb.

The operation was carried out at Brigham and Women’s Hospital as well as Boston Children’s Hospital in order to treat this uncommon brain condition, which is known as the “Venus of Galen malformation.”

World’s First Surgery in Womb

When the blood vessel that carries blood from the brain to the heart does not develop properly, the condition occurs. According to the news outlet, the malformation causes an overwhelming amount of blood to stress the heart and veins and can cause a series of health issues.

According to Dr. Darren Orbach, a VOGM specialist and radiologist at Boston Children’s Hospital, “the two big challenges are tremendous brain injuries and immediate heart failure after birth.”

Giving the subtleties of the confusion, he said that regularly, babies are treated after they’re conceived utilizing a catheter to embed small loops to dial back blood stream. However, treatment frequently occurs too late.

CBS News reports that during a routine ultrasound, doctors discovered that Baby Denver’s mother had a rare blood vessel abnormality in the brain. Baby Denver was growing normally inside her mother at the time. This condition often results in heart failure or brain damage, resulting in death. Truth be told, Denver’s heart was battling, and the abnormality was getting hazardously enormous.

So, at 34 weeks of pregnancy, a team from Boston Children’s and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital was able to fix her malformation while she was still in the uterus by using ultrasound guidance, an amniocentesis-like needle, and tiny coils that stopped blood flow directly into the abnormal blood vessels.

A vein of Galen malformation (VOGM) is a type of rare abnormality in the brain’s blood vessels, according to Boston Children’s Hospital. The brain’s distorted arteries in VOGM help to slow blood flow by connecting directly with veins rather than capillaries. This causes a surge of high-pressure blood into the veins. This additional tension in the veins can cause various issues.
