Kate Middelton revealed a cancer diagnosis on March 22, saying it was discovered after a surgical procedure, which oncologists say is common.
“In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous,” the princess of Wales said in a public statement. ”
The procedure was successful. However, tests conducted following the operation revealed the presence of cancer,” she stated, adding that she has begun a course of preventive treatment as prescribed by her medical staff. It is unclear what form of cancer she has.
Following the news, oncologists told the media that detecting cancer during another operation has become much too prevalent.
“Unfortunately, so much of the cancer we diagnose is unexpected,” Elena Ratner, MD, a gynecologic oncologist at Yale Cancer Center in New Haven, Conn., told the news outlet.
Dr. Ratner did not speculate on Ms. Middleton’s procedure, but she has encountered cases where women undergo endometriosis surgery under the idea that the illness has created benign ovarian cysts, only to find out later that the tissue is malignant.
The princess’s illness comes as cancer rates among young individuals increase. The American Cancer Society predicts that there will be over 2 million new cancer diagnoses in the United States in 2024, a record high. National data suggest that diagnosis rates among adults under the age of 50 have been increasing over time. From 2000 to 2019, the rate among this group increased by about 13%, reaching 107.8 per 100,000 people.
“We need to focus on the messaging that young people need to be aware that they are also at risk,” Fola May, MD, PhD, an associate professor of medicine at Los Angeles-based UCLA Health, told the sources. “It’s not only older people anymore.”
